Case Studies

Several key case study projects provide an example of the breadth of our work and experience

MULTI RESIDENTIAL - Montgomery Apartments, Tauranga

A five level apartment block, consisting of 23 loft style apartments. All apartments are designed for maximum energy efficiency, and for views across the estuary. All apartments are well isolated accoustically from the adjacent neighbours, with the highest levels of fire protection and structural performance.

HOSPITALITY - Rotorua Entertainment Centre

A large 6000sqm existing food procesing warehouse was extended and repurposed as New Zealands largest indoor entertainment facility. The building accomodates 15 different tenancies, including a Chipmonks franchise, ten pin bowling, a trampoline park, mini golf, escape room games, laser tag and feature virtual reality game rides. In addition the facility has a full cafe and 3x flexible conference rooms, with optimal accoustic isolation

RESIDENTIAL ALTERATIONS - Ngaio Alterations

An existing 1960s dwelling was solid in construction, but was not providing suitable for modern day living. The house was renovated to create indoor/outdoor flow from the living spaces and to allow a series of interconnected, but zoned spaces.

RESIDENTIAL NEW HOUSE - Cambridge New House

A 5000sqm flat site in Tamihere was purchased by the clients, who desired a new executive house with a difference. The property was required to be a statement within a street of high end properties, while also providing a complete accessible set out and design for a special needs family member. The result was a 500m² single level home set out along one long 1.5m wide hallway spine. Large double height spaces and higher level windows provide light and drama.

HISTORIC BUILDING REFURBISHMENT - Datamine Offices, Parnell , Auckland

An historic ex railway sub station and signal box building was in a very poor state of repair, with significant water damage issues, grafitti walls, and a significant issue with fleas. The buildings were connected with a glass linkway, all issues rectified, and a full mezzanine floor added for office space. The finished building was recogised by the Railway Restoration Society as the best such conversion in NZ

PUBLIC BUILDINGS - Mangere Refugee Centre Auckland

Bluepencil was involved early on with scoping works to create a framework for a new Rufugee Resettlement Centre for New Zealand. The centre was required to accomodate a large variety of uses from community based residential accomodation, to large scale kitchens and dining, to full medical facilities to meeting and ceremonial spaces.
